Most people think the Philippines is all about tropical beaches but the Philippines ahs a variety of good trekking destinations and would be a great way to test out your endurance before heading for more strenuous trekking destinations like the Himalayas in Nepal. A list of weekender treks  is listed below;
Mountain Climbing / Trekking / Hiking from Manila (weekenders)...
-Mt. Natib: a ferry ride away or bus ride to Bataan. great view of Manila Bay from a top. same are as the historical site of Mt. Samat. Limatiks abound. insurgency can be a problem.
-Mt. Arayat: the only outgrowth in central luzon plains. view of the surrounding towns and Mt Pinatubo.
-Mt. Pinatubo: guides are now required. very nice view of the crater from the candelaria. very serene.
-Mt Sembrano: all the previous sites are to the North of the city. This is to the east in the province of Rizal a 3hrs jeepney ride. More of a hill. great views of the largest lake in Luzon, Laguna de bay.
-Cavinti ranges: can be accessed through Rizal Prov on the east or from the south through Laguna. This is a stretch of mountain lining the south side of Laguna de bay. More than 5 falls can be reached. great site for rapelling. nice view of Laguna de Bay and Caliraya man-made lake.
-Mt. Maculot: so much for the north and east. South of Manila is the province of Batangas, blessed with nuemrous peaks and coral laiden shores. Below are nuemrous peaks in Batangas. This is the mountain on the opposite of Tagaytay ranges is the favorite among weekend warriors. An easy climb with the most reward of a commanding view of the infamous Taal Volcano and it's lake. on the other peripheral half is the view of Balayan Bay where Anilao is located. Trails are badly worn out and more and more becoming of a commercial trail esp during summer.
-Mt. Batulao: the jagged peak! Two significant peaks. great views of the surrounding area. Fruit bearing trees are abound but are farmed by the locals.
-Mt. Talamitam: a stone throw away from Batulao on the side of the hiway. Great views much the same as in Batulao with an active river running.
-Mt. Pico de Loro: can be accessed from Nasugbu, Batangas or Teranate Cavite. Peak is carved from larged boulder in the shape of Parrot's Beak, hence the name. Offers a stunning 360 degrees view the shipping lanes, the beautiful caylabne bay and a great nightview of the towns. on it's foot is a military base.
-Mt. Banahaw: so much for Batangas and lets head to Quezon. This is the well known enchanted mountain. A magnet for worshippers during the Holy week. Great views of the surrounding towns and a glimpse of the 7 lakes of San Pablo. At least 3 days are needed to hike all throughout the mountain.
-Mt. Cristobal :If Banahaw is the positive peak this is the negative. Also known to be enchanted. this is a dormant volacano with best view of the 7 lakes.
- Mt. Makiling: this one is in Laguna. Also a dormant volacano with an active mud spring. view from the peak is limited. a very diverse rainforest with rich flora nad fauna. limatik can be a problem.
Then there's always the 3 treks which are the most demanding;
MT Kanlaon ( 2465 meters )in northern Negros Island; call  the City Tourist Office in Bacolod at 434-7472 to contact the NMC ( Negros Mountaineering Club ) for organizing your trek with a guide ( P6000 for 2 persons starting from Mambucal and P5000 starting from La Carlota ) Allow for 3 to 4 days to complete this trek.
MT MAYON ( 2462 Meters ) near Legaspi in the Bicol region of southern Luzon Island with the cost being P4500 for 1 or 2 persons including a guide, porter, tent and food and P1500 charged for each additional person. For those independent travelers on a budget you can try hiring a guide for less from Buyuhan BUT DEFINITELY DO NOT climb it alone or withOUT a guide since there are many deadends, curves and twisted paths. Allow for 2 days if you start early.
MT APO ( 2954 meters ) the Philippines highest peak near Davao on Mindanao Island can be done by seasoned trekkers in a day or two but most people should allow 5 to 6 days for getting ready and the climb up and back down.  Guides and porters can be hired for P300 / day from Kidapawan. You need a warm sleeping bag, plenty of water and don't forget salt to prevent dehydration. There are two routes the Kapatagan, the shorter one and the Kidapawan maybe one day longer.

Mt. Apo, outside Davao City in Mindanau is the highest peak in the Philippines. The "Grandfather" of Philippine peaks is the nickname of Mt. Apo which anchors the southern end of a range that bisects Mindanao the archipelago's southern island. Soaring to 3,143 ( some say 2954 meters )meters (10,311 feet), the highest point in the Philippines, it is the centerpoint of the Mt. Apo National Park located on the boundary between the provinces of Davao del Sur and North Cotabato. At 72,800 hectares, the park is one of the largest in the country and is home to the endangered Philippine Eagle. The gateway to the park is through the town of Kidapawan. If you're planning a trip, take a look at "Preparing for Mt. Apo Climb" and the "Mt. Apo Climbing Guide" for more information which you can find in National Bookstores. It takes 4 or 5 days and March thru May(the dry season)is the best time to go. There are Water Falls and HotSprings on the way up that provide beautiful "rest stops".

Mt. Pulag is the best place in Luzon for capturing the beauty both the sunrise and sunset and viewing both the east and west coasts. With its peak at 9,640 feet above sea level, Mount Pulag is only several feet lower than Mount Apo in Mindanao. Protected Areas Management Board (PAMB) overseas the mountain. The Mt. Pulag peak is accessible through Kabayan, outside Baguio, 450Km or a 6 hour bus ride north of Manila.

Mount Santo Tomas in Tuba,Benguet, which overlooks Baguio City, can be reached in a half-day climb from the base of the road in Green Valley, a suburb of Baguio. It's another destination to get yourself ready for more strenous treks.

Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island is a great place to trek with 2 route choices available. Negros, the Philippines. Trekking is allowed only during March and October to December, weather and volcano permitting. Contact:Protected Areas Superintendent (July 2000 Mr. Errol A Gatumbato) at least 3 months in advance to get application forms. Sagada in the Mountain Province of northern Luzon Island 6 hours north of Baguio City, Philippines offers great trekking and caving. One day, two day and a 3 day trek to Bontoc are available with local inexpensive guides. Find guides at almost anywhere you stay in the village.

Banaue
The walk up to Batad, 20 minutes by jeepney outside the village of Banaue, famous for its 2000 year old rice terraces is a good place to start getting in shape with a three hour uphill walk.

MAYON VOLCANO - The World's most perfect cone is 12 hours from Manila by bus to Legaspi City. Climbing time for Mayon is two days if you're very fit, the weather is clear, and in you're in a rush, but three days will allow more time to enjoy the views and less time for your legs to recover. The best guide for Mayon is Ric Dy, who lives in Legaspi City in the shadow of Mayon. You might get some rain on Mayon unless you go during the summer months of March to May.

SAGADA - Shangri-La in the Mountains of Luzon Island

SAGADA
The Philippine version of Shangri-la, Sagada may not be utopian but it is definitely remote, exotic and peaceful. Although hundreds of backpackers and a few small tour groups have visited Sagada each year since the 1970s commercial interests have failed to change the unique harmony between mother nature and the local tribal culture. A tribal council prevents Filipinos and foreigners from owning land, houses and businesses thereby making it impossible for tourism to change the beautiful atmosphere.
The local families maintain the freedom to decide how their village culture adapts to the needs of accommodating visitors so cultural traditions are preserved. The wonderful feeling of harmony visitors experience as they
go hiking through the nearby countryside can only be compared to meditation or prayer and keeps people returning.

Sagada lies in a small valley at an elevation of 1500 meters or 5,000 feet. If you plan was to go there from December to March, you can expect to experience night temperatures as low as 4 degrees Celsius with moderately
warmer weather of 15-20 degrees during the days. The local residents of Sagada are Igorots of the Kankanay tribal ancestry. Roughly three thousand of them live in the town center while another 9,000-10,000 people inhabit the outlying areas. The forebears of the current residents practiced an unusual burial practice by hanging and stacking coffins, hand carved from tree trunks, in the limestone cliffs and caves near town. Sagada features
caves that can be explored (even by non-experts) with the aid of local guides, an interesting hike along an underground river, a waterfall and pool to cool off in after a day of exploring, and a quiet serenity only found off the beaten path. Exploring the "big cave" is a challenge requiring a guide with ropes and miners' lamps. The "bat cave" and a couple of other caves are smaller and could be explored alone.

As far as accommodations are concerned, Sagada has several reasonably priced inns from $4 to $10/room. St. Joseph's Guest House is run by the nuns of an Episcopalian convent offers dormitory beds at $3 and serves tasty vegetarian dinners. Masfere's Guesthouse is run by the family of the famous photographer of the 1920's untouched tribal people, has rooms for under $10 and serves a nourishing breakfast. Both provide help to locate local guides. Several treks are are available that you can view on a map diplayed on the wall near the entrance at Masferes. You can also pick up a few photos, post cards or tee shirts of the mountain tribes taken by E. Masferé. At Sagada Weavers Association beautiful hand loom weavings are souvenirs that last a lifetime and help the locals survive.

My friend Dave, an Englishman I'd met years ago in Seoul, has made Sagada his "home" for the last 7 years. The first four years he devoted to painting and the last three years to music. He's managed to accumulate enough musical
instruments to host a music club for the locals ranging from 12 years to 55 years old! Several bands have formed
as a result and practice in the late afternoons. The last I heard, Dave became the church organ player. So if any of you have ever dreamed of living in a peaceful place with a frugal budget where you can pursue the art of your choice, Sagada could be your Shangri-La.

GETTING THERE!
You can leave before 10am so you can see the volcanic ash left by Mt. Pinatubo and the scenery during the last hour of a 6 hour ride.Check-out the market in Baguio; the cinnamon rolls and natural strawberry jam are good snacks for the bus trip the next day. Since the bus trips to Sagada from Baguio depart between 6:00 am and 7:00 am daily from Dangwha Bus Station it's a good idea to find it the night before so you know where you're going the next morning. You will pass long stretches of rough zigzag roads with breathtaking scenery on the way to Sagada. As you negotiate your way through the vast mountain ranges of Benguet, you view contrasting landscapes of jagged mountain peaks, and extensive networks of terraces with all sorts of vegetable crops set amidst a backdrop of blue skies and silken white clouds. You ascend the mountainous terrain of Benguet, and will notice a considerable drop in the temperature before entering the Mountain Province. Eventually you'll descend to a low-lying area before ascending the adjacent valley of Sagada. You can take the 11:30 pm bus for a midnight run to Baguio from Victory Liner on EDSA & on the same day go to Sagada. You arrive in Baguio at around 5:30 am.

Few travelers think about the Philippines as being a trekking or hiking destination but the medium sized mountains and volcanos above provide rigorous, scenic trails, for even the most seasoned men and women who wish to get off the beaten track. One added feature to most of these places in the Philippines is few travelers visit them so you will not be joined or passing groups of people like you will during trekking season on the most popular treks in the Himalayas of Nepal. Of course snow capped peaks do not exist in the tropical Philippines but the friendly local people you meet along the way and an ice cold San Miguel Beer or Mango Shake and nearby tropical beaches not far waiting for you after your descent makes trekking in the Philippines worth consideration.
